Even The Sparrow
As I was reading Psalm 84 Monday morning, verses 3 and 4 grabbed hold of my attention. They say, “Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house, ever singing your praise! Selah”
Immediately, I was reminded of Jesus' words in Matthew 6:26: “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
As we're contemplating the Good News together as a church and seeking to answer some of the biggest questions that are in the foreground (or background) of every human heart, we find ourselves being brought back to Genesis 1.
Sunday, Kyle talked about the measure of authority and power we were given by God in Eden. As those who were to represent God, we were given measures of the beauty, authority, and honor that are inherent in God. Disconnected from this, as Kyle stated, we go looking in other places.
I'm just wondering if we really know that we are of more value than the birds. Do we believe Jesus when he says, "are you not of more value than they?"
If we believe this, and we read in Psalm 84 that "even the sparrow finds a home" in the house of God, then we can be confident that the doors of the house of God will not let in the birds and then shut in our faces.
If you are a child of God, you belong in the house of God. It is here that we sing his praise and learn how to take up the beauty, authority, and honor that he measured out to us in the very beginning. We don't have to look in other places, and that is very good news!
