Responding to The Nudges

This past weekend at the NSN Conference, Paul mentioned that some people worship as if the Trinity is the Father, Son and Scripture. That really resonated with me because the Holy Spirit was rarely mentioned where I grew up in church. A lot of time was spent on God, Jesus and the Bible. Not so much time on the Holy Spirit. And when the focus was on the Holy Spirit, it caused a church divide. No wonder I focused on God, Jesus and Scripture!

Kyle challenged us (me) to “increase our capacity to notice and respond to nudges of the Holy Spirit.” Just what does that look like in my life? How does the Holy Spirit get my attention? Is it a gut feeling? Or is the gut feeling just, as Kyle says, a bad taco? Is it a racing heart? Or is that just my nerves?

I have found it is sometimes being led to read a certain Scripture, to make a phone call or text someone, or to pray for someone. That is a start. There is so much more.

We have been challenged to be “Agents of Re-enchantment” in this world of disenchantment. Another word for enchantment is delight. The political climate, pandemic, and social injustice all are counter to delight. Yet, the Holy Spirit wants us to delight in Jesus and to share that delight.

While I delight in the Lord, I am finding it challenging to delight in some relationships, to delight in physical limitations, and to delight in the overwhelming sense of what needs done. The challenge for me is to live in delight so that others will want the peace and joy that the Holy Spirit brings to our lives.

Come, Holy Spirit, Come.
